Ive put in a brand new 454 and it seems to be running really rough. Ive checked the timming over and over. Everything is new. Can a car pick up in the sump give you less pick up than a marine one?

There are a lot more things than timing that could cause the problem, have you checked that the plug wires are all in the correct place? Have you checked the spark plugs, perhaps a broken one, might try a compression test, vacuum test.
If it's not a high volume pump it would pump less.

Welcome to the Forum!

I'm not sure that there is a "marine" pick up. Like Don said, if you have the high velocity oil pump, there is a different style pick up recommended for that.

But what does that have to do with your ignition problem?? A little info on your system might be of help.

Is this live, or test? IF it is live then think about checking your manifolds for water ingestion.

Re: 454 chev big block problem

In the 1st place was running well idling but not under load. Chevy 454 Engine is in a Sea Ray Sundancer 270. We disconnected the knock sensor & it ran really well under load for 30 mins. Came back next day & it would not start. Rotor Button Broke (now replaced). Having other dramas ever since. The starter moter burnt out (now replaced) battery goes flat even though new. Wernt getting spark replaced Distributor, Spark plugs, leads, fuel filter & overhauled carby. It seems now that there is knocking from both sides of the rockercovers, its as if you were waiting for the oil presure to build up, but the noise is still there. That is why i was wondering what type of pick up should be used. I was told that you cant adjust the rockers. Also wen i take off each lead no.3,5 no difference, and 4,8 cyl still runs the same no change. It must be only running on 4 cylinders.

whats the oil pressure????? maybe collapsed lifters due to lack of or no oil pressure, sounds like you may be second guessing yourself on the oil pickup tube you used, ARE YOU SURE ITS THE RIGHT ONE?? you need to make sure you have oil pressure before going any farthur.

Did you weld the pickup pipe onto the pump?
If not, you'll wish you had.....
