I have a 1970 455HA 45HP Chrysler Magneto that I purchased as a project. The motor has not been run in some time.

THINGS I'VE REPLACED/DONE SYSTEMATICALLY AS I TRIED TO START THE MOTOR:
1) Charged the battery. (Did this before I tried to start)
2) New gas tank and gas tubing. (Did this before I tried to start)
3) I went through all the wiring and cleaned it up. (Did this before I tried to start)
4) I changed the points/condensers and gapped them per spec (per Seloc Manual).
5) The plug wires aren't great but since they are part of the coil, I left them on for now.
6) New spark plugs, gapped per spec.
7) I bought a carb kit, cleaned and replaced parts in the carb. Adjusted float per spec.

TRIED TO START
1) Both plugs are getting a spark
2) Fuel is getting to the carb. Unhooked gas line at carb and gas comes out both with primer ball and with fuel pump.
3) Sprayed starting fluid into carb but no indication of start, slight backfire.
4) Switched plug wires to make sure, but same results.
5) Removed plugs after each attempt to start but there does not seem to be any gas.
6) There seems to be some exhaust smoke as if there is some gas firing.
7) Tried starting with slight acceleration.

It seems to be a fuel issue but I'm not sure why when I spray starting fluid I get no results.

Seems that the pointcamring has been replaced in a wrong way.
Check that you have an arrow up when you look at the ring.
The points shall open at the sharp level on the ring.
Maybe you flywheelkey is bad. Pull the flywheel and check.

Conventional ether type starting fluid is a big no-no. No lube in it; plus it can back-fire thru carbs...

Use a spray bottle with 50:1 gas oil mix in it.

Did you not have spark before replacing the points?

I used to have the WestBend version of that motor; marketed a couple of years before Chrysler took over.

A very simple good running motor. You're going to love it!

check the carb. i have a spare (76' 45 hp), took off the carb and put it on my 50hp and it would not run. it seems there are two holes in the metering rod that was plugged. used a small peice of wire, cleaned the holes and she fired up.

What is the compression per cylinder? Do you have a good strong spark that will jump at least ?? on a spark tester with good color? Have you changes contact points before, with good success? No Offense! On any questions just trying to help. With Fire/Fuel/Compression you should get some results.

Re: 45hp chrylser not starting - HELP!!!

Thanks to all for the quick responses. I ran out of time today but will look at it again tomorrow. SeaKaye12, Thanks for the heads up on starting fluid. I wasn't thinking about it not having lube in it. I should clarify that I am a weekend mechanic at best and I've worked on everthing from autos, mowers, snowmobiles and snowblowers but this is my first boat. I bought a Seloc manual and made sure I followed what was said however, I'm sure I might have missed something.

Not sure what the point cam ring is but I'll check again. I gapped the points with the cam in position. These were replaced because I was not getting a spark. Even thought I read the manula I still was careful to reinstall the new points similar to the existing ones as far as how they were seated.

I did replace everything in the carb kit and clean out as much as I could find but I will carefulley take it apart again and look.

I haven't check compression yet. Need to get the guage back from my brother. However, spark looks really good and the compression from the pistons that pump fuel for the fuel pump are working.

Thanks again to everyone. I hope to report back with good news.

GOOD NEWS. I found some time to look under the flyheel again. Looks like the cam was in wrong because now it starts right up. BAD NEWS Not sure why but it won't shift. I'm going to start a new post with the shift questions. Thanks again to everyone.

IF you are not getting full spark and a smooth running engine..

Double, triple and quadruple check the gap on the point.
I had to set mine 3 times before I got it to smooth out. They are very touchy.
