I am going to check out a 45 HP Chrysler this Saturday. All I know is it runs fine and is electric start. I am looking to put it on a 14' rubabout, what things should I be looking for?? I was told that I need to match transom depth with the outboard leg. How important is this? And Where do you measure from for the transom Depth? THe middle? Sorry if these are dumb questions but I am a newb. Thanks

Re: 45HP Questions

a dum person is one who will not ask . Take a tape and measure from the top of the transom to the bottom of the boat ...thats the transom height ....then on the motor measure from under the transom clamp to the antiventilation plate just above the propeller ... the two should match.
The heights available are 15im 20in (and 25 in) but often these are 18.5 22.5 . You can run a long shaft ..20 in on a short shaft transom but then you draw more water ...you cannot put a 15 in on a 20 in transom. ....you may be able to lower .ie cut the transom in the middle to fit a short shaft or pack the top to lift a motor slightly......to high is no good .to low is not always a problem

Re: 45HP Questions

And, as an electric start engine, they were made in two versions: electric start and magneto ignition with NO alternator, and electric start battery ignition WITH alternator.

If you don't mind recharging the battery after a day's running, either will do BUT if having the engine charge the battery while running is important to you, then check to see which one it is.

Battery ignition will have two black coils mounted on the side of the engine (or possibly the cylinder head)
