I been doing a lot of thinking about putting a 470 Merc 170hp in a 1970 27ft Rivera Cruiser Pontoon,, An wondering if a person can order the big base that goes under the pontoon to hold the inboard outboard motor an outdrive in place or would have to try to make one for it?? My toon is only made for an outboard, I just thinking about doing it cause I like the i/o,, I was going to take the motor an outdrive an set it on back of the toon an take it to the lake an see how it set's in the water with all the weaight on it,, The motor is in a 1980 Bass Pro Missle Bass boat,,I have not seen any bass boat that even looks like this one,, Nobody seems to want to buy it or trade me anything for it so mite as well do something with it,, So I was just wondering about doing this as a winter toy,,lol,, If anybody think this is bad or good or fun then let me know,, An I know it going to be a lot of work but should get some enjoyment comming summer,,, Thanks,,

Converting a toon to an I/O would be a pretty big project, not saying you can't do it but it would be really expensive and super complicated to do yourself and to buy an I/O pod would probably run well over $1000 if you can find one to fit your engine, most are set up for Merc or Volvo.

You are actually making another hull so it would have to handle at speed and be water tight adns tand up to the beating the water gives it, then you have the stresses of the engine to deal with not to mention you have to modify the deck to get access to the engine ect ect.

With all the parts on hand and having done it a million times it takes me about 2 1/2 hours just to weld an i/o pod together, starting from scratch would be almost impossible.

So if you don't have an extensive work shop and you are a very good aluminum welder I think I would scrub this one.

See if you can draw it out down to the last detail, chances are if you can't draw it up you can't build it.

I can't imagine doing all that work to convert a toon to I/O and then putting a 470 in it!

I agree with the others. You could put lots of money and time into this project and not be happy with the end result. I also have doubts about that boat handlling the weight and stress of an I/O.

Well it would almost be like putting a bath tub under the motor an bolting it to the toon,,lol,, I know there is alot of up's an down's about the 470/170hp but seems like a lot of pepoles don't take care of them like they should any motor's,,, An could anybody tell me what the 470 an the outdrive weight is??

A little realization that perhaps it is not a good idea???? LOL!!!

Even though I think it is a terrible idea, I have tried and failed at many projects in my younger days. So, if it a true passion, then go for it!!!

We learn from our mistakes only if we don't make them again.

actually if the 470 is maintained properly it is a GREAT engine, it really gets a bad rap from people that neglect them, I had one in my Sea Ray and really liked it

470 is not too bad but a newer 3.0 L is lighter and less troublesome
