470 engine coupler & exhaust shutter,, bad or not?

im swapping motors, how do i know if my rear coupler is bad or not?

also my shutter flapper, is this supposed to sit tight up ahainst the pipe? mine kinda flops around

Was your old setup smooth? if yes thats a good sign for that coupler. There should be "no"rotational freeplay when you mate the coupler to shaft and only a bit of sideways slop. Splines should look good no rounded off corners etc. That covers the splines. The other area that can be a problem is alignment within the coupler. Clamp a 3/4 or 1 inch bar in your vice, set coupler on it and spin the coupler. Does the flange run true? If so youre definitely good. Most in my expce have some wobble. How much is the question. Ideal is to have a known good one to compare to.I have not seen a spec giving allowable runout etc. I purchased a new one recently that had to be removed due to too much wobble,it was a trial and error thing figuring out what was acceptable.
