Well guys looking to install a 470 into my 79' 21ft crusiers inc boat. I know its not the ideal engine but I have it and it runs well. I dont know alot about the particular motor I have however I have had it running on a pallet and sounds very healthy.

I changed the oil and plugs before getting it running primed the carb and she fired up no problem.

I plan on upgrading to a altanator in the future.

Is there any matinance that I should preform before installing the motor I heard these motors have poor seals on the cam any one have the part number for that?

Also I am going to have to fiberglass some new mounts because my hull previously had a v8 does this motor just require the front mount or need a back mount aswell. If possible can anyone get me some pictures of the inside of the boat where they 470 is mounted.

Thanks Taylor-

Re: 470 help

Your gonna have to change the outdrive (upper at least) as well, the 470 and a V-8 have a different ratio.

What size/make/model engine was/is the V-8

Re: 470 help

I would do a compression check and a cooling system pressure check to make sure all is OK before you put it in. With it running check for coolant leaking out of the weep hole (lower starboard side) of engine waterpump. Don't know enough about the mounts to help you.

Re: 470 help

Word of advise do the alternator conversion now with motor out. it would be easier to remove the old voltage reg. and to remove the stator make sure all the magnets are still attached to the balancer and reinstall. and as i agreed with stonyloam a hundred times do a compression check the #4 cylinder is the first to go when the head warps. i have mentioned this is on previous post my 470 was running great also but when i did a compression check 1-3 cylinder was 150 psi the #4 was 130 right there i knew the head gasket was shot because of the head being warped took the head to machine shop and sure enough it was warped because the head is cast and the block is aluminum bad combination
p.s. what i'm trying to say is it is so much easier when the motor is out of boat trust me been there done that. also you will need to find manual 6 & 8

Re: 470 help

I would do the cam seals and head gasket before you drop it in. I used arp head studs on mine to ensure the best clamp load possible. Also if the cam has groves worn in it get it fixed now.
