I was installing an aftermarket (Sierra) impeller cover gasket yesterday. I put Perfect seal on both sides of the gasket and torqued it down to 15 lbs-ft. I noticed that the gasket material squished out in a couple of places around the bolts. See photo.

I've never had this happen before. Anyone else seen this phenomenon? Would you be concerned or am I being a Nervous Nellie?

Nate

Re: 470 impeller cover gasket squished out

assuming your talking about the waterpump body for the impeller in the lower i'd be concerned...

ya don't use anything on the gasket. + 15 ft. lbs. is to tight. look in your service manual i believe them bolts are spec. for tightening to an inch lb. spec. 5-7.5 ft. lbs comes to mind w/o looking up the spec. for the conversion to ft. lbs... but ya really need to use and inch lb torque wrench to tighten them. most ft. lb torque wrenches don't go that low..

went and looked at the spec. for alpha1. 60-80 inch pounds for the nuts, 30-40 inch pounds for the screw. no sealer on the gasket...

I'm talking about the impeller cover on the engine, not the impeller in the lower unit.

I just verified for good measure: Page 3A-23 of #8 Manual, "10. Apply Perfect Seal to gasket and bolt threads." Page 3A-1, Impeller Cover 15 lb-ft.

My concern is that if it squished out around the bolts, could it have squished inward causing a leak (can't see inside the cover at this point). I don't know. I'm probably just being paranoid.
