I just rebuilt a 1978 mercruiser 470. It runs great! Except :D : When i get it to about 2000 rpms water began to come out of the radiator cap. Its brand new. I looks fine. I sems as if i heard of this before. What is the problem... It is not going into the overflow..

Skybizzer

You could have a bad head gasket, cracked block, cracked head. One possibility is you are getting the pressure from the cylinders into the cooling system through the above problems.
You could also be overheating which would cause the coolant to boil out.
Check with a NAPA store and get a block tester. It will tell you if exhaust (pressure from the cylinders) is getting into the coolant.

I would suspect the part of the manifold that the cap screws screws onto. If there is excess pressure, it should first come out thru the overflow tube, and I guess if the pressure was massive, it could blow up the cap.
Is the flange bent or cracked ? Put your old cap back on and try that.

Good luck......Jon

I assume you have a closed cooling system although that is not mentioned...if so, there is probably inadequate circulation of raw water cooling through the heat exchanger and/or to the exhaust elbow. Since you mention the problem begins and worsens at 2000 rpm+, I would tend to check raw water cooling flow first.

In the typical 470 set up, the 'radiator' cap is located above the thermostat, but if heat is resulting from failure of the exhaust to be cooled adequately, in addition to the coolant, you'll experience the condition you describe because the exhaust elbow is overheating more than the heads or block as a result of the heat source coming from the exhaust. In other words, if your temp gauge shows somewhat higher than normal temp, but coolant is over flowing because the exhaust elbow is excessively hot, the issue is inadequate exhaust cooling. This can be caused by:

1 - Worn lower unit impeller (causing poor raw water circulation). Typically, temp becomes problematic at higher rpm's.
2 - Restriction in heat exchanger
3 - Restriction in raw water flow to exhaust elbow.
4 - Restriction of raw water flow within the exhaust elbow.
5 - Exhaust restriction in exhaust elbow, or post exhaust elbow.

With the closed cooling system and the symtoms you describe it may not be as serious as indicated by some of the others. I experienced this issue when my lower unit impeller broke up. It can happen when the primary over-heat source originates in the exhaust elbow rather than from the heads or block.

Re: 470 Mercruiser

hello
use the radiator pressure tester and test the integrity of the closed cooling system. if you dont wish to buy a tester, any good automotive shop should have one and the test can be done in 15 min or so. if it passes a pressure test odds are it in the raw water pump or a blocked exhaust riser.
I may have a new riser to fit it. also check the heat exchanger for blockage. the others advice is pretty much dead on :)

i see almost the same problem with my friend 470 after the rebuild when the mechanic took out the boat he found out that the impeller

in the outdrive was mess up so he install a new water pump and impeller, that solve that problem, so as the guys above said you could be havimg a raw water restrition. just my two cents, good luck

Sorry for the error...in my original response above, I mistakenly referred to the exhaust manifold instead of exhaust elbow. I have edited my response and changed all references to exhaust manifold to EXHAUST ELBOW. Sorry for the glitch....
