I had not seen anything on this issue recently so I thought I would share my experience the past week. The short of it is I had the battery switch turned to both batteries, and smoked the regulator /rectifier on my 470...no surprise there. After researching and finding how costly the alt conv lits were I decided to take a different route for this season. I remotely mounted a 16 amp, 2 stator feed, 1 wire battery feed regulator/rectifier to my engine. The unit is sealed with epoxy so no issues with being "Marine" 2 wires from stator feed. 1 wire to common at 90 amp fuse at starter with "sense" wire to same place. Charges 13.5 - 14 VDC. More than I had before !!! we will have to see for longevity but for now seems ok..cost $50.00

470 - Smoked A Regulator - A Fix

I have to ask, isn't it hard to roll a regulator? :faceplam:

I can see this working if you bought a rectifier AND regulator that can handle the current. Otherwise, I see more smoke coming. Yes there are ways to build such a regulator and I could easily build one. But it isn't for everybody that has no idea what it takes to make one actually work and handle the current. Bridge rectifiers are everywhere that easily can handle the current. But the regulator is a different animal There are adjustable voltage regulators (LM317 for example) out there that can take anywhere from a couple volts to over 37 volts as their inputs, But they have to have additional components to handle the current they will have flowing through them. JMH!

Thanks for the responses, and I am aware it was an old thread that I came across while looking through the various forum for help. I understand gm280 that the one I installed may not carry the whole load of the boat, accessories ect. But in a normal situation for me anyways the only real draw is the blower, which I need to check the amp draw on that because it seems excessive to me. I do plan on doing an alt conv at the end of the season, which is short enough here in MI. When I run the blower steady the volt meter drops to under 13 VDC, turn it off and it goes up to 14--14.5 VDC. Anyway the part # I used is Kohler 41 403 10-S (1P41 403 10-S) I am happy to hear any thoughts, concerns. I did fab a mount and spaced the reg/rect up and away from the base for air flow around the heat sink area, it does get warm but not too hot so far. Not near as hot as the merc one !

Just a note to pass on to any that have the same issue. Have ran 2 tanks of fuel thru the boat using this rectifier system, batteries are charging good, unit is not too hot during use. thinking all is good !!!

I looked up the Kohler regulator capabilities and is seems to be at least a 30 amp regulator. So that should do the job because I don't think your stator output will put out that much current. And I do like the compact housing and well designed heat sink capability as well. If you mounted this to dissipate the heat, I can see it working well... :thumb:

Thanks, gm280. I try to think things thru before "jumping in" I did mount the reg on "stand offs" on a remote mount and it seems to be working ok !
