2007 Chaparral 256 SSX,496 Volvo, bought it saturday, lake tested it,ran great, went to the lake Sunday, stopped and put 25 gallons of super unleaded in it on the way, unloaded it took off fine. After running for about 5 min it looses power for a couple seconds, like you pulled a spark plug off for a second and put it back on.The next time we stopped it bogged coming out of the hole and pretty much did it all day,the more load you have on it the worse it does it. It comes up fine if you ease into it,but when you go wide open to pull up a skier it bogs and hesitates bad. There's not really anyplace close to get it looked at, and I'm taking it on vacation in a few days so I really need to fix it myself if I can. Any info or help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd start by checking the fuel, and fuel water separator, removing that and draining in to a clear container and checking for water & contaminants.

If it's been sitting a while, the fuel in the tank may need to be drained and completely replaced.

Else you may also have a problem with the carb ( unless fuel injected)

What about at top speed? WOT run. Same as test? That's the highest fuel rate.

its fuel injected, runs fine wide open. I'm thinking plug wire since it's intermittent thanks for the replies

Well that's a nice easy one, but be careful not to be throwing parts at it. Could still be fuel related, could be software if there is a command from the ECU that is messed up, could still be fuel supply if there is some instantaneous interruption that is not there under a steady load.

I,m definately going to check the fuel system, the reason I ,m thinking plug wire is as I stated in the description it feels like someone taking a plug wire off & on,then I found this. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=49961 sounds like the same problem. Who knows, got to start somewhere.

Well that thread reads almost as a who's who of the I/O brains here, so great. Haven't seen anything from NewportDave lately :( DonS is missing on that one, and he's the best Volvo guy here. Good luck!

Before you go buying new spark plug wires you could run the boat at night and look for a light show all around the engine, Then hook up a timing light to ensure all 8 wires are firing.

It pretty common on this style engine to have bad spark plugs and make it run exactly as you are describing.

Good luck with it.

I checked the fuel filter,no sign of water.I pulled the plugs and all looked good except #5,it was black & wet looking, checked the compression, all cylinders 190. I'm hoping it was just a bad spark plug,if new plugs don't fix it I will try a plug wire & coil on that cylinder. thanks for your help

It might be any of the items you listed or a plugged injecter. You really need to get the engine scanned with a lap top and find out if there are any fault codes. Just changing parts and hoping gets real expensive.

I would love to have it diagnosed by a pro but thats not an option right now. I'm leaving for Lake Ouachita in a few days and I have 12 family members going with me, including 6 teenagers who will be highly dissapointed if I'm not able to burn up about a $1000 dollars worth of gas in a week pulling them on tubes, skis, wakeboards, etc. Now that I think about it may be cheaper for me to fix it after I get back.LOL
