My boat runs rough and stalls at idle but runs fine at speed. The mechanic suggested that my carb needs to rebuilt. It is a 4BBL carb. What is a reasonable price for rebuilding a carb?

Well depending on who rebuilds it depends on the price. If your capable the cost would be parts alone. If you remove the carb you can bring it to a automotive carb rebuilding shop (check the yellow pages). If the marine mechanic does it I know it will cost $$$ but I would ask for a "running" warrenty. The mechanic "suggested" it and if that does not work what will the mechanic suggest next?

I would consider the simple tune up route first, points, plugs, condensor which is going to be cheaper than a commercial carb rebuild. Poor idling in a car is usually a result of a vacuum leak, points (or cap and rotor)and plugs.

Try some good carb cleaner first too. Your low speed jets and passages may be slighty clogged.

My best advice is to buy the manual and do it yourself if you have the time and mechanical experience. I just don't trust "suggestions" I would hunt for definite answers.

Bob
