My girlfriend just bought a stingray with a volvo penta in it. I am not sure of the model number but it is the 3.0L Penta motor. A starter bolt broke off in the block while we were out last weekend. the only way i see to fix it is to pull the engine. What is the process for pulling this motor. I have done several motors in cars and trucks but never a boat. Do i have to align the motor when reinstalling? Do i have to pull the drive off? What should I look for? and is there anything that i should or would have to replace while the motor is out.

Thanks for your help Matt.

Matt, If it was up to me, I would avoid pulling the motor unless you have too, can you get to the broken bolt? if you can try an ezout, your auto parts store should have one, or try a machine shop, good luck

One thing that I have done in the past to remove broken bolts is weld a nut onto the stud and then remove it. Not sure if you can do it in this applications, just something that you may want to consider.

Good luck

I cant get to the bolt the way the motor sits in it right now. The threads broke off in the block with nothing at all sticking out. The bolts come in from the bottom so i would have to drill upwards. From where i have to drill to the hull of the boat is about 5 inches. I was thinking of just building a bracket to hold the starter where it needs to be and just using the other bolt instead of pulling the motor. I want to do it right though and not jimmy rig it.

If you take out the other bolt you should be able to pull the starter off then, leaving you some of the broken bolt exposed. Then you could try some vise grips or get a nut welded on.

If you have a 5 inch gap, that may be enough to allow you to weld a nut onto the broken stud. It is worth a try, it is much easier than pulling the engine. I use a stick welder. With 5 inches, you may even be able to use an angle drill. The stud should come out easy.

Good luck

Hey!

Been there, done that :D Well, to make the story short, the only way to do it is to pull your motor. It's not a big problem, i got it out in 1.5 hours or so. The screw broke off right where the threads started, so i couldn't weld anything to it (guess you have the same problems). As Don S said, those screws aren't corroded at all, so they come out quite easily. Just use a CC drill (one that drills to the left) and the drilling alone should get the screw out. If not, use ezout with the small hole.I got my screw out with drilling only!

Thanks for the help guys. I have the same problem as you alex. Was it hard to put it back in or was that pretty easy too?

Naaah, it's easy... It's a little more time consuming than taking it out, but it's no big deal. I didn't really take the engine out - just put it in the middle of the boat & tilted it so i could get to the screw easily. But if you can do that or not depends on the layout of the boat. Don't forget to align the gimbal bearing when you're done!

You need an alignment bar, one for Merc, OMC is the same thing, you can find them on ebay for about 40 bucks.
You also align the engine to the gimbal bearing, not the gimbal bearing to the engine.

Re: 4cyl Volvo Penta Engine Removal

Is this a design flaw? We started with the exact same thing. Fixed by boat place, repeated two or three more times. One time they said Volvo had a fix, but it won't work on Stingray as the motor sits too high? I'm looking to see if this is a common problem? mc
