My battle continues!! I now have this motor running and runs when out of gear as soon as I put it in gear the power dies away and it stops any thoughts?
I have a 71 so not familiar with one as new as yours. Does it have a gear shift from neutral to forward? If yes, does the prop turn freely in neutral? Pull the plugs put it in forward and turn the flywheel. Is it easy to turn and does the prop turn? I'm thinking your problem is fuel related but making certain the leg is working is important. If it has a slow speed lean/rich knob turn it to a richer setting about 1/8 of a turn at a time until she runs in gear and then keep richening it until it stays running. Get an OMC service manual for it and it will be most helpful. Best of luck, and let us know how it is going. Rick.

i had 2 this type of motors.
my advice is to pull down tower unit and take i t out, atache garden hose to water pipe in mid section and run water(30% of valve open)and start engin and you will know if gearcase is bloking or not

Thanks Rick Will check it out tonight it does have a gear shift so shouldn't be a proplem. I did wonder about adjusting the mixture but wanted to get some advice before I started messing about
Also, could you possibly be running on only one cylinder? In fast idle, pull one spark plug. If it dies, the other cylinder is probably not working. If no change, replace plug and pull the other one.

Interestingly when I turn the prop in neutral it still appears to be in gear! So might need some adjustment there? Also When I was trying to get the thing started I wasn't convinced the top cylinder was firing either so will give that a try as well. With it in gear it does appear to be reasonably free to turn obviously I expect some resistance.
Well folks it appears I have a couple of issues. Only running on one cylinder and stuck in forward actually I think it's just not disengagiing fully. I have taken the gear casing off and it would appear that the linkage works so I can only assume that it is an issue in the gear casing. On the electrics I have changed over the plugs and the leads and it makes no difference so am thinking something further down the line a coil maybe. Does anyone have any thoughts on either of these issues and fault finding?
