This is a carb on a Merc 4hp, 2cyl, 1980 GNAT. It has a built in tank and is gravity feed to the carb.

Every 5th time I shut this engine off, 10 minutes later there's a drip, drip drip from the mouth of the carb. Needle and seat are in perfect shape. Float is brass and unsinkable and adjusted properly (5/64 - 7/64). Lightly tapping the side of the carb stops the drip. I've disassembled this carb several times. No dirt in carb since I've installed a fuel filter.

Here's an exploded view.

My big question is about the float spring, #7 on the diagram. When I first took the carb apart years ago, I didn't notice it until it fell out and I'm not sure exactly how it goes. Does anyone know if it's supposed to assist pushing the float down or holding it up? It seems to want to go in so it pushes the float down, which is how I've been puting it in. Anyone know better?
Manual is no help in this regard.

PS - Carb always drips when tilted up.

Engine runs fine.

Help!
