I picked up a sweet little 1969 4HP Johnson motor model 4W69B in a trade over the weekend. The guy I got it from said that the fuel mixture was 50:1. I would like to know if any one has an owner manual or operators manual to share because I would also like to know what the bets lean/rich mixture setting for this motor is too so I don't ruin the motor. Thanks.

Re: 4hp johnson owner operator manual

You should run 25:1 in that engine. OMC specified 50:1 however your engine uses bushings for the connecting rods and on the bottom end. The only needle bearings are on the top end of the crankshaft. The four horse was the only engine built this way after 1962 I believe and didn't become fully jeweled (use of needle bearings on all rotating components) until 1978.

Set the carb at 1 1/4 turns initially and go from there you might have to reduce it down or increase it a little until it runs smoothly. If the fuel lines are original they should be replaced with alcohol resistant lines. The original lines cannot handle the alcohol in modern fuel. The owners manual doesn't have much info you would be better served by getting the Service manual.
