4HP Johnson stalls when put in gear

First post here... I have model #J4RLCUD (1987). Engine was sitting for years. I rebuilt the power head-new rings, gaskets, carb kit. Fuel pump seems ok-pulled starter and gas pulses out of line. Ran for about 8 hrs total on 2 separate days. Now the engine only runs in neutral. When shifted into gear it stalls. Any thoughts?

Are you sure it's running on both cylinders?

It definitely was running on 2 cylinders-i could tell by the sound and when i pulled the plugs. I ran the motor again on Saturday and it stayed running while in gear. I think it has something to do with the gel seal not being fully cured and i changed the lower unit oil. i'll be trying it out on the boat in a couple days-hopefully all goes well!
