First post here, but have done alot of reading on this forum to help me out with my other boat projects, but now im stuck and cant find the answer so here goes!
I bought 2 4hp lightwins, neither were running. one is a 4706b 1977 CDI ignition, and the other a 4336c 1973. They were sold as is, neither were running at the time. sounds like my kind of project.
So I get them home, and decide the one with CDI is gonna be my motor and the other one can donate parts. I put it in a garbage can of water, put some gas in and within a couple minutes had a running engine! It ran well for a few minutes and died. Next step I rebuilt the carb, water pump impeller, put it back together and it all seemed to be running so great when............
.... i took it up to the lake, put it on my 8`zodiac and had a great boat ride which lasted about 2 minutes and it happened.. CRUNCH CRUNCH GRIND! the driveshaft splines stripped out, and worst of all the females splines in the crankshaft were completely destroyed, its just a round hole!
So not wanting to give up, I returned home swapped my bottom end, carb, rope starter, plugs, and all other parts i salvaged back onto the 73 4hp. I was really hoping for the best here, but to no avail, there is no spark on cylinder 1. Pulled off the flywheel and quickly found out why, both coils cracked and leaked everywhere. NO boating today!
Obviously ive put way too much time into this already and too much money, My wife says I have a serious illness, I am obsessed with boating and tinkering. Heres where I need your help and suggestions. I dont want to spend any more money on this(unless its a few bucks for gaskets) as I very well might end up with 2 broken motors I am already in the hole for.
1- Can I strip down my 73, remove the crankshaft, and install it in my 77 with CDI. I think this might work, but i havent pulled the flywheel off the 77 to see if the cam ontop of the crank will cause a problem
or
2- convert my 73 to CDI. looks like i would have to swap the case to the ignitor can bolt on, the head so the coils can bolt on, and anything else? is this at all possible?
anybody have any ideas? ive got one good ignition system, and one good block/rotating assembly.
thanks for any ideas and help
