We have a 2004 Four Winns 288. We recently had the high pressure pump replaced on the starboard engine. As we were taking the boat out to test the work the port engine backfired and shut off. After that it would crank but not start. About a year ago we had the entire fuel cell and ignition coil replaced on this engine. Considering how much we've spent on repair with this boat we have decided to start trying to repair things ourselves. We have read about the paint flakes from the fuel cell entering the fuel system. This weekend we removed the fuel filter, dumped the gas from it and inspected it. There was a small flake of paint in the container. We filled the filter with fresh gas and replaced it. The engine still didn't start. We removed the fuel pressure regulator to check the screen. The screen was a little dirty. Our shop manual said not to reuse the o-rings and we cracked the plastic on the screen so we couldn't see if it started after the screen was cleaned. We keep our boat in the Florida panhandle and we live in Georgia so we're only able to work on it on the weekends. So we're ordering new o-rings and a new pressure regulator since it doesn't look like you can order the screen separately. This could possibly fix the problem but I wanted to get other opinions on possible solutions. We're had the boat about 3 years and we only fill up at our marina so we've always put ethanol-free gas in it.

Did you check to see if there was spark? Check fuses and relays for ignition and fuel pump operation?

What is the full model number or serial number of your engine? From 2000 to 2006 there were lots of changes in the wiring, and the year of the boat means nothing as to the year or model of the engine.

I'll have to get the serial number next time I'm down. We did check the fuses. The fuel pump comes on when the key is turned. How would we check the relays?

You know the fuel pump relay works, because the fuel pump runs, if you have spark, then you know the ignition relay works.
