I just bought a 5.0 elgin (571-58571)can anybody tell me about this motor. plug gap? year built? I believe the mix is 16:1. I can get it to start very easily but I can't get it to idle for very long. Any suggestions?

Re: 5.0 elgin

Hello Captron, My book says it's a 1955 made by West Bend. Gap is .030 for plugs, .020 for points. For carb adj. initial setting is one turn open from closed position for both high speed adj. needle and the idle mixture adj. needle. Carb must be readjusted under load, after motor is warm, for best high speed and low speed performance. If your carb is a Tillotson MD the high speed needle is the bottom one. If it is the Tillotson MT the main adj.needle is the one closest to the choke plate and yhe idle adj. needle is closest to the manifold. Mixture is 16:1 HTH Kevin
