I recently with the help of a mechanic buddy pulled the intake and replaced the lifters on my volvo penta 5.0FL PNCS. It is in a 96 reniell. THe temp gauge and the tachometer are not working now. The tach shows no reading for the RPMS and the temp gauge needle bounces all over the place. Do I have the wiring wrong? WP_000020.jpg Do I have a bad ground? I can live without the tach but running the boat without the temp gauge working scares me. Thanks.

Re: 5.0 FL Volvo Penta Temp and Tach Gauge not working

If they worked before you did the work and they now don't, the answer is obvious. Yes -- you messed up the wiring but there should only be two wires at the engine that would affect this. The tach sense wire is (the "S" terminal on the tach) connects to the coil. The "S" terminal on the temp gauge goes to the temperature sender. If that wiring is correct, then there are other issues such as a bad plug wire running adjacent to the tach sense wire which induces a voltage into that lead and hence the bouncing. Check wire routing so the small gauge wiring is kept well away from plug wires.
