So my recently purchased boat with a Engine Family ( 3V05.0GXI Date 3/2003 ) ( 5.0 GXI-D s/n 3869217 4012095592)

Out drive is Volvo Penta SX Prod. # 3868891 Type SX-M Ratio 1.60 Serial # 4202119913

Trans. TSK SX-M 3868844 1151032757

Engine runs fine, gas is fresh. Problems is at full throttle boat will go 500 yards and die, half throttle will go a bit further, idling will run all day. After it stalls, I turn the key on and off a couple times, it starts right back up. I found a dirty connection on the low pressure pump and fixed that. Replaced gas line with clear tube to check for bubbles, leaks. Before I start the engine the gas level in the line is down to floor about 18 inches from pump, gas is slowly drawn up to filter as it runs about twenty seconds, turn engine off and over a minute it goes back down. I don't see any bubbles from leaks. The High pressure pump makes some different pitched sounds and this was thought to be the problem and was replaced; the new one sounds the same. Part #3588866, your chart I found calls for 3588865 is this ok? The pressure valve on the low pressure pump was checked by somebody else and they said it was good. I just was checking it while it was running. I used an allen wrench to depress the valve and I could feel air coming out 5-10 psi, I thought gas would come out like it does when it is not running. While doing this the noises (high pressure pump) would stop every time I depressed the valve.

Check to see if the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail may have debris on the screen.

I checked the regulator and did not find anything. so I removed and disassembled the fuel cell and found exactly what you showed on your posting for this subject. It was just like your pictures except for the cigar butt shaped wad of paint that was floating around under the high pressure pump. I cleaned it up,reassembled and it runs fantastic! Will repeat this process this winter, what should I coat the inside with? Redpony thank you for your help!
