More often than not the engine dies when pulling back into neutral. Slow forward is steady but just at that crucial moment when moving into neutral the engine will die. All other engine functions are good.

Not sure where to look first.

Check the neutral cut-out switch ( I believe that is what it's called). It is supposed to momentarily stall the engine to let it come out of gear under load.... but if it malfunctions, it can cause the symptoms which you describe. When you pull back on the throttle ( but not quite going to neutral) is everything ok? (ie no stalling unless you actually try to go to Neutral) ?
If so, I would highly suspect the above.

That's exactly right, engine runs fine low forward, dies when going into neutral. If I can get into neutral quickly enough, it will stay running. Makes for so tough dockings! Thanks,

Agree, lower shift cable
The switch that causes the motor to stumble when shifting is called the shift interrupter and is located on the shift plate.
