Trying to help a friend get his boat back going.
I am not a boat mechanic, but have been tinkering with cars for 40 years so know way around an engine fairly well.
This is a 1992 boat with 5.0 OMC engine.
He said it was bogging down and backfiring. When I checked it out found all the plugs loose to the point that a couple of them I took them out with my fingers not even turning a full round. He had had a local guy do a tune-up on it year before so guess that explains that.
Short version - figured had burnt valves. Pulled the heads and sure enough - several exhaust valves burnt almost completely up. Took heads to the shop to see about getting rebuilt and got call back today that one of the heads is cracked. Now I need to come up with a head and not having any luck. The casting is E8 JLAA.
Anyone know where I can find one?
or should I just go aftermarket and replace both?
If so, what is your recommendation? I would assume I would also have to replace valve train if went that route??
