i have a 87 20' bayliner with a 5.0L. The starter died on it and i replaced it. after replacing the starter the boat will not run at all. i have changed the plugs, fuel filter, anch checked the cap and rotor. it will attempt to run when turning the key, but as soon as you let go when you feel it is started it dies? also, i have already double checked the hookup of the wires hooked up to the starter. any help would be greatly appreciated!

Check your coil for 9-10 volts with key on, the coil gets 12v when the key is turned to start and then it gets 9-10v through a resistor wire when the key is ON, sounds like you are missing this voltage.

Check how far back the key turns when you let it go.It may be turning off be retracting too far.I had this happen in a car once and had to drive it to the repair shop while holding the key in the correct position.Did you press the main breaker on the front of the motor??Charlie

do you have a teather switch on the boat. check your main harness plug on the engine to see if you hit it when you replaced the starter.
