Hi to all, great forum! I've been an avid reader of this for some time, but its finally time to pose a question to the board of experts.
Ok, long story short,I am based in the UK with a Mariah 218 powered by Volvo5.0GL PEFS 2001 with SX drive. This winter, it suffered catasrophic freeze damage (8 inch square side of block exploded!) and I have a new 5.7 partial engine from a UK supplier called Re-Power Marine. I believe this has been sourced from the US from a company called Eagle Engines, and so far I'm very happy with the new engine. Anyway, its verified a marine engine and I am currently in the process of bolting on all my ancillaries.
I'm competent with engines (although better with Aero Engines!), and have a couple of questions:
1. After setting up initial timing, I plan to setup the timing and carb with the engine on the stand. I can only seem to find figures for timing assuming the engine has the drive connected and is in gear (550-650rpm). If I set timing at 700rpm with no drive, would this be about correct? My plan is to get the engine running as best I can, then put in the boat and fine tune in gear with the timing light.
2. For timing figures, the manuals all assume the use of 87/89 octane fuel, and thus quote advance relative to this octane. In the UK our fuel is quite a high octane, minimum 95, max 99. Would anyone know what I should set my timing to if I have to run with this fuel?
3. Finally, I have noted a slight misalignment of circulation pump pulley to raw water pump pulley, where I would need to shim raw water pump about 1/32 - 1/16 to become inline. Has this ever been heard of before, or has anyone used washers or shims to align them? I am assuming its because my new engine has a 'non volvo' harmonic balancer and maybe slightly narrower than the volvo one.
4. I have read the manuals and all the carb settings for 5.0 / 5.7GL are the same. they all use the same carb (Holley 2300 - 2bbl), same cam (yellow), same idle speed, same jets. So originally I thought I would have to rejet, but according to the books, I should be ok. any experiences out there?
Thanks to all!
