5.0GXi in 2011 Monterey - engine alarms & tach issues (long)

I recently purchased a 2011 204FS with 138 fresh water hours. Power is from a Volvo Penta 5.0GXi. Right before my purchase the boat was completely serviced and bellows were replaced by an authorized VP service center. On my first day boating the engine alarm sounded after about 10 minutes on the water. I was running about 3,000 rpm. Motor did not go into “safe mode” but both “engine status” lights illuminated. Temp & pressure gauges normal. Boat still running fine. All fluids fine. Put it in the buoy and had a cocktail.

Next day back on the boat and running with no issues for 30+ minutes. No alarm. No lights. Pulling back into the buoy field at 5 mph and the alarm sounds and engine status lights light up. Put it in the buoy and had a cocktail. Similar scenarios repeat for a few days - completely random alarm as far as I can tell and even a few runs with no alarm.

I love technology so I buy the VP Easy Connect to allow me to check diagnostic codes. Get the Easy Connect installed and run the boat today. Runs great. No engine alarms or lights. BUT - now I can compare the gauge information to that on the computer and I discover my tach is totally inaccurate. At idle the computer reads 600 and the tach is reading 1600. At 25mph the computer reads a respectable ~2300 and the tach displays 5-6,000. At 2900 on the computer the tach needle is pointing straight down - to around 8,000 I’d guess but it’s off the scale.

When I shut the boat off the tach needle sits at 800 (with all power off). Turn the key to the accessory position and the needle drops to 0. Start the motor and the needle jumps to 1600-1800 (while the computer indicates a correct 600).

So - after all of that here are my questions:

There are no diagnostic codes stored so any idea why I’m getting this seemingly random engine alarm and engine lights?

Could the alarm issue be related to a somehow faulty tach/speed sensor? Maybe an over-rev alarm - although the alarm at just above idle speed in the buoy field would likely rule that out.

And - any thoughts on what might be causing the tach issues?

I know previous owners and they claim never to have had these issues in the past - and they are willing to participate in any costs associated with necessary repairs so I don’t think they are trying to pull a fast one here.

Any thoughts, ideas, comments are GREATLY appreciated. I’m hours away from the servicing dealer and I don’t want to have to pull the boat and drive there if at all avoidable.

Howdy
Were going to need a motor serial number?

The issue never happened with PO and issues now after work was preformed by a dealer. Start looking for connections that are loose or corrosion.

The tach reads from the coil

Thanks for the reply. I’ll double check connections today. Serial number of the motor is A130047

Thanks for the SN, tells us its has CAT's

Going to need to get the readings when it acts up if you don't find something loose
Maybe muc can advise once you get some codes

Happened again today. Running about 10 minutes at 3000 rpm and the engine alarm sounded and light lit up. All other indicators normal. No codes displayed on the Easy Connect. Couldn’t find any obvious connection or corrosion issues. Made an appointment with the local shop because I’ve hit the limit of my own abilities - but still interested in any other thoughts.

I’ll report back on the shop’s diagnosis and fix.

Have you checked the tach setting on the back to make sure that it is calibrated for a V8 and not a V6?

The easy connect is nice to have, but it isn’t a substitute for a scan tool. I don’t have much experience with it, does it show exhaust manifold temperature? If so what are the temps when you get the lights?

No, the alarm has nothing to do with the tach. BRICH1260 has a good idea on that.

I have been experiencing a very similar problem. I have a 2014 F224 FourWinns IO with a 300HP VP engine with only 60 hours that I bought new from the dealer. However, I can only use the boat for minutes at a time before the "Engine Status" light comes on, the alarm sounds, and the boat will no longer move forward or back. This has been a mystery to the dealer and they classified it as a "weird thing" with no solution. If I flush the engine I can get it to work for approximately 20 minutes but then the same problem occurs. The dealer doesn't have the authorized Volvo computer to run a diagnostic test so I'm waiting for another dealer but they're swamped. I'm told I may need to send the computer from my boat to the factory so they can reset it assuming it's a false alarm.

Hi Jeremy, Welcome to iBOATS.
While your might be similar to the person who started this post. It might not. That’s why it would be a good idea to start your own post.
If you include your engine serial number we may be able to help.

I don't have the "New Topic" option.

Good grief please READ
