5.0Gxi shuts off at cruise RPM and restarts

My boat has been very reliable but this past weekend on the way out to the fishing ground it just quit while cruising at about 3200 rpm. I quickly checked the ignition fuse and that was OK. Pulled the throttle back to neutral and it restarted right away. Put her back in gear and stepped up on a plane only to have the same thing happen again at the same rpm approximately. went thru the same routine a couple more times with the same results. I fired up the kicker to limp back to port. After a few minutes started the motor and tried running at partial throttle. She did fine at partial throttle so I pushed the throttle up slowly until she stepped up on a plane, barely. I held the RPM around 2800 and she ran all the way back to the dock. Today, I looked for loose connections but nothing obvious. Going to do more trouble shooting this week but hoping someone may have some suggestions?

Welcome Aboard!

This should probably be moved to the Volvo Penta forum, as a Gxi is GM based VolvoPenta and not joint venture (with OMC), I think anyways. Let's see if a Moderator sees this and adjusts if needed.

It would be good for you to include model year along with full model number and serial number. There are differences in years for the injected setups, each with their own quirks. Yours could be clogged internal screens in the fuel pump array, this is just an example of the different types of things it could be based on the model.

Good info. I will get the info from the boat and post it later. It is a 2000 model with duo prop. Looks like the OMC outdrive. I'll get the model numbers.
I did look for the obvious today, opened all the wiring and could not find any problems. Finally fired her up and went out for a short run. Could not get the problem to reoccur. Even bumped the RPM up into the 4000+ range.
I plan to open the water separator and see if it has any water next. sporatic problems like this are bugger. Thanks
I pulled the numbers from the boat this evening. The motor is a Volve Penta 5.0 Gi according the the tag on the engine and the flame arrestor cover. The outdrive is a DP-SM 1.95 (M22) Dou-Prop.

Try cleaning out the fuel pressure regulator screen, there is a service bulletin to remove this and use a C washer supply by volvo.

Interesting Sea Hog. I have been getting a lot of comments at the local marina pointing to fuel as the cause. I replaced the water/fuel separator filter this evening expecting to find it full of water. Only had a couple drops of water in it. I was going to try a fuel pressure guage to see if that might point to a bad fuel pump. I will try to find the screen you are talking about and look at that.
Many thanks to all offering suggestions. They give me hope I will resolve this issue soon.

Thanks for the pics Sea Hog but that does not look like my engine. Mine is a 5.0 Gi which has a throttle body injection.
