[Q] When is the fuel pump on the 5.0L, ( mechanical ), typically replaced proactively?

I am still running on original fuel pump at 500hrs, and engine was installed new in 1995.

I run in Puget Sound waters, boat is winterized and put on hard during winter months.

I usually run until they fail, then replace, but my 95 gave up around the 20 year mark. Keep close check on your oil level, if it starts to leak it may not make it up the tube and go in the crankcase.

generally the motor is killed by lack of winterization or other factorys prior to a fuel pump failing.

A good question and I like the thinking behind it...but in reality it depends on the use and conditions the boat has and currently sees.
I’d say run it until it shows signs of failure and if you worry about it, carry a spare and the tooling to change it. Save you a fortune !
