5.0l Mercruiser,Reverse wont work :( help!

the engine is in a 1999 searay 190, and whenever we go to engage reverse, the engine cuts out. after a while out on the water sometimes it works fine. we recently had a problem with corroded electrics near the throttle, but we have fixed that (we think) and it still does it. any one ever had this problem,

Lotsa people have had this kind of problem, your lower shift cable has probably stretched. You can try readjusting it, and it may get you through the rest of the season, but if it is bad it will need to be replaced.

OK, I made an assumption(Alpha Drive) with my first response. You will need to clarify this for everyone.
