I recently acquired an old 1964 5.5 evimrude fisherman. I want to replace the spark plugs and the ones that came out of it were champion J4J. On the link I found on this site about tune-up for this motor, they recommend champion J6C. Are these plugs interchangeable?

They are pretty close. J6 is one heat range hotter than J4.

I use the J6Cs on mine, with no problem. If you do any trolling I would go with the J6Cs. If you are always running it full out, the J4Cs may be better. Either will work fine.

Yabbut, if you work on the height of the outboard, trim it just so, and get just the right prop, why, it'll get you up to at least 37.5 mph, right? Besides, I hear that if you change the carb, you can make it the same as a 15hp. :D

Thanks guys, I knew I had come to the right place for info:cool: That's interesting CAT. Are there no other mods I would have to make to make her a 15? I have a 3hp and an electric trolling motors already, so that might be an option. Your right samo, I use the term "full out" lightly with the old 5.5:D

A 15hp? Why stop there? I wonder what'll happen if I take the carb off my Big Twin 30 and drop it on! :)

Uh...I"m just spoofin' ya, there. So many folks come here wanting to "upgrade" their outboard that way. It's sort of a joke around here. You have a nice little outboard. Just maintain it and it'll push your kids and grandkids around long after you're gone.

I'm pretty sure you'd have to change the reeds and make an adapter plate for that upgrade. But, oh, man! Wouldn't that just make your 12-footer fly? Still, you might have a little trouble trolling, so it's probably not worth it.

You got me man. Well, I'm here to learn, and I can laugh at myself. All the other info was good!

I'm pretty sure any "performance" mods of any sort to to that oldie but goodie would ventilate the crankcase in short order. Those rods like to go flying when given half a chance...

Keep her rich on the oil, too - 24:1!

Trolling? Who trolls? I go full or stop. :) There's very little in between. I haven't fished on our river in 20 years or more since I was a kid. Probably closer to 30!
