ok question here. I have had given to me a 5.5 hp ted williams motor.

It is air cooled by the badges and by the looks of the motor. yet it has a sticker on it saying to run the motor in fresh water after running in salt to flush the motor. Is this just a generic sticker they put on all motors or does this thing have some kind of water recirculation system?

This motor only has about 3 hours of use on it!!!!
fella bought it new and then was given a bigger motor so this one gathered dust
and a little rust sitting in the back corner. Untill he gave it to me.

nice lightweight motor I would like to use as a carry on emergency propulsion system for my bigger boat.

Great compression and spark on it I just want to make sure there is no type of pump or impeller in it that needs changing before I run it.

Need a model number but most likely an Eska built motor.Uses a Tecumseh air cooled power head and a water cooled exhaust leg.Water should mist out of the relief holes on the leg. There is an impeller.
Eska has been out of production since about 85.A marginal finicky prerformer, should do ok as backup. If solid state the ignition parts are difficult to find and expensive.

I had a few question about my 5.5 that me help you in the future with this motor.

I've ran mine twice now since I got it and it seems to run good for being a 1975. I hooked it up to a 16 foot Smoker Craft drift boat and ran up and down the Huron River with no issues at all.

Be sure to check that your lower gear has oil in it and that the gaskets have a good seal. If the gear oil is coffee colored you are getting water in there and need to change the oil.

My 5.5 hp is running good but it's up for a big test this upcoming weekend. I'm going to a 9000 acre lake to give it a real run.

Good luck with your motor....

Powerhead is air cooled, but the exhaust is water cooled. And if the water pump fails (which they often do), the exhaust housing gets hotter than blazes and it is just like the powerhead is sitting on a hot stove. So the powerhead overheats and siezes. It is a real chintzy water pump.

Thank you all for the info .guess I should find and order that impeller just to be sure. Everything else looks pretty good.
