I was givin a boat with this motor model # cd-18s
serial # 2207200, and was interested in finding out what year it was manufactured, mix ratio, and lower gear unit oil specs are. Also i tried to start it today and it fired but for about 3 seconds sounded very smooth. When i tried to start it again it seemed very hard to turn over, is there a location to put oil in the crankcase or is it lubercated by mix only? From what i have gathered it is a 1961, mix : 25-1, Gap .020 i would just like to know if this is correct. And i was also woundering if the "S" in the model # ment anything.

Re: 5.5 Johnson Seahorse I.D.

I think I found the problem with the hard turn over. While looking at the motor I decided to remove the pullcord housing, to see if that was where the binding was occuring at. Instead I found an inspection plate, which I assumed was for the point adjustment. So being currious I opened it to look at the points and coils. All looked good, and then while gapping the points i noticed a screw that looked out of place. And it was! It was one of the coil screws the washer was pretty bent up. I put it back where it belonged, But did not try to start it. It definatly turns over much easier. I pulled the plugs and gapped them @ .30. When I pulled the plugs I looked at the top of the pistons and walls one looks like it has a crack not sure. Need to do comp test.

It's more likely you were looking at a score mark rather than a crack, especially if it was straight. It can be hard to tell what you're looking at when trying to look down a plug hole.
Gear oil should be Bombardier/OMC "HiVis", or SAE 90W GL-5 rated outboard gear oil available at Walmart and just about everywhere else. Stay away from the 75W stuff.

Let us know what you find!

Re: 5.5 Johnson Seahorse I.D.

Ok After i got 2 hrs sleep i started to bang away at it again. Got the motor to run in a test barrel, but when i went to put it in gear it would die. After it did this a couple of times I decided to open up the lower unit. And damned if I did not find the problem. The drive shaft coupler below the impeller is broken it looks like a large spring inside that snaped apart, Also the lower part of the impeller housing is cracked and mushroomed up towards the motor. If anyone has these parts or replacement part #s that would be a great help. Also is there anywhere online to view an exploded diagram of parts and #s. the impeller looks pretty new and is in good shape.

That's too bad. I've heard a few cases of those shock absorbers going around here, but never one where it damaged the lower unit casing.

See what Twin City Outboards wants for the parts. Also try to locate a nearby outboard junkyard.

Good luck to you!

Well i guess im sol. I a outboard shop and they said that pinion shaft shock absorber is no longer available. So i guess I am going to weld the shaft togather. As far as the impeller housing goes im gonna shop around to see what thats gonna cost. I really need someone to send me a exploded view with part numbers or a web address where i can view them. Thanks for the quick response.
