Evening everyone, quick consult. I have a 2001 5.7 Mercruiser / Carb. I had change the starter with a new Sierra replacement because it would not start. When I try to start it it makes a horrible sound like metal with metal and spurs gas out the carb. Both the teeth on the old starter and new starter and the flywheel are fine, no marks, scratches nothing at all. I removed the sparks, turn the engine with the starter without a problem, put sparks back on and it starts fine. Any Idea what could this be, the boat has not been used in 2 years, started only sporadically.

Thanks in advance

With no more info my first guess is it either jumped timing, or you have some valves stuck open

Do a compression test

Thanks for the reply & pardon my ignorance, what would the comp. test tell me? The stuck valve? What should I be looking for as compression?

I don't know for sure if this would cause your problem but could you have possibly put in a counter rotation starter?

My thoughts from your description is a hydro-lock. Was there any discharge from the spark plug holes when you spin the engine with the plugs out?

I'm going off the spitting gas out the carb. If the timing was way off (distributor removed and reinstalled) or timing chain slipped, this could cause your issue. Otherwise, if a valve is stuck/bent. Compression should be 125 to 150 psi.

Your last comment was "it starts fine" does this mean its running now without issue?

Alldodge, sorry missed part of the info. If I remove the sparks spin the motor and reinstall it will start fine. Should be able to test comp today

Sorry missed some info. Started looking for the source of the problem and troubleshoot comp. test came out fine 125-150 all around, spark plugs look good, no water indicating Hydro, timing was not touched before. Decided to replace the tarter with and old original one and notice one of the bolts was loose, tried the old and worked fine, put on the new started (Sierra) with washers and tried ait a few times, let it warm up and started again. It worked just fine, after all the headache it was just a loose starter.
