First off. I must admit. Ive been reading this forum for a LONG time and the info from it and it's archives have been instrumental. I know this topic has been beaten up and I hope im not beating the same drum. BUT. Here goes nada.
5.7Gi Volvo Penta in an '03 Falcon. I have had the boat for 3 years. It runs like it's about to pop out of the hole. Then falls flat. Back the throttle back. It catches up to itself. Then does the same thing. Starts fine. Idles fine. Runs fine until that point. I can baby the throttle and actually trudge about 20mph. As long as I don't advance throttle from there. It will never cut out. Fuel pressure is 60 at H pump from idle until it cuts out. Never changes. Low pump is at 12 and never changes either.Fuel filter has been replaced. I pulled the ??fuel injector regulator?? and it has a screen on it that was gunked with a fine black residue. It has been cleaned. Still no change. I am obviously not a mechanic but with a little guidance can fix most things.
Here are the signs and symptoms leading up til now...... First off. The boat rarely sits. It is how I make my living. It has 3000+ hours on it and runs like a top. The boat has done this randomly over the last few years though. Most of the time while under a good load and most of the time while cruising. It will fall flat. Then about 2-3 tries to get on plane. It breaks over and never has the issue again. Not just for the day. But it will go few months without it happening again. I have associated it with the fuel filter and changed it asap. Never having it occur again made me feel I fixed the right thing. Prior to the last incident. It done the same thing while I had 6 fshrmn on board. My temps were running up to about 210 at that time. I associated that with the boat maybe going to "limp mode" bc the temps were climbing up. The temps shot back to normal with in seconds. And 2 tries to get on plane had it running absolutely normal for the next few weeks. I checked water pump that day. It was weeping. Replaced complete pump the next day. Temps 160 always BUT every now and then I notice it creeping up to 200 just before going right back to 160. Ive ran plenty of trips since then. Boat runs fine. Temps run 160 about 99% of the time. Whether idling or with load. I will replace t-stat this wknd.
I know this is long. But wanted to give complete recap. I would like to know a few things.
Since fuel pressure is within spec. Could I assume that I am not having fuel pump issues?
Can I suspect that air in the lines is not an issue or will air in the lines still give proper fuel pressure? (proper fuel pressure based on archives)
Would the prior randomness of this lead to anything in particular other than fuel delivery?
The ??fuel pressure regulator?? (by fuel rail. Held on by one clip) has a hole in the screen. Hole is uniform so is it supposed to be there??
What is the proper way to clean the regulator?
Thanks for reading the nove. Although long. I wanted to be sure to give as much info as poss. Thanks for any input available.
