My Volvo 5.7 GSi with 420 hours is wearing the serpentine belt (black dust everywhere). The raw water pump and pulley are new. The tensioner pulley is new. The tensioner pulley bounces constantly and sqeaks at idle and at speed. The alternator, power steering pump, water pump, and idler pulley all spin freely by hand when the belt is removed. Everything appears to be in alignment, although the front edge of the raw water pump pulley is about 1/4" back towards the engine block when I lay a straight edge against the alternator pulley or the powersteering pump pulley. The engine sounds smooth, and runs strong. I was refered here from another forum, and I've searched here for a similar problem with no luck. I sure would appreciate any insight you guys have. I wish I'd known this site was here before.

Thanks much for your help!

Rusty pulleys will also eat up the belts, but they also need to be in alignment, What is the full model number of your engine?

The full info on my engine is: Model - 5.7 GSI PEFS; SN - 4012037981;Part No. 3869059. It is a 2000. I've kept the rust off the pulleys by wire brushing when rust develops.

Did you have that pump off for any reason. It's crankshaft mounted and there are a couple of bosses on the pulley under the pump that must be indexed properl. I assume the pulley for the raw water pump wobbles too?

The pump is new. It came mounted on a new pulley. The supplier (Marine Parts Express) says it is the correct pump. There is no wobble in the pulleys. The idler jiggles up and down, and sqeaks. I think the idler/tensioner should remain pretty much stationary shouldn't it?

Re: 5.7 GSi Eating Belts

I can spin the idler/tensioner pulley easily by hand, although it is the stiffest of the other free spinning pulleys. The squeaking is coming from the spring in the tensioner. Lubricating it with oil quiets it down for a while until the lube wears off. The idler/tensioner is maybe 4 months old.

I guess the best thing to do is get a new idler/tensioner and see if that's the problem.

Thanks for the help.
