just to verify I have read in my seloc, but want to check with you guys that have done it. I have the flat top distributor and the timing is close but I have a kind of loping Rythym. Once All I need to do is jump the two wires on the diagnostic and run the rpms to 1000 and time the engine to 10 BTDC then unplug. Correct?

No, that is not how it is done

The flat top distributor cap (HVS) is not adjusted with a timing light, it is adjusted without the motor running at all. This is Merc but is done the same way

Timing is set by the ECM based on inputs from the engines sensors. Once you have followed All Dodge`s post above to set the rotor with #1 cylinder at TDC, you will need to set the cam retard. Cam retard is set with a Rinda type device while RPM`s are above 1K by rotating the distributor base. You need to be within 2 degrees 0.

Unless the distributor was removed you really should not have to do anything but set the cam retard.
