Ok Here's a possible $$ Pickle !
My brother in law just informed me that he hasn;t had his boat professionally winterized yet ! Temps have been at the lowest 25 deg. I walked him thru the Manifolg plugs over the phone. He has a Raw water system. He told me he has already taken care of the Freshwater service on the boat (toilet sinks blah blah). But the motor I have no Clue. I'm running over after work. He has the books on the motor but not the one's I'm looking for. (No winterization procedure) It says " Visit your nearest volvo dealer". He did tell me that the manual states there are 2 drain plugs on the block. he said when looking for them he found on the starboard side there is a heat sending unit (instead of a drain ?) and on the port side of the block (same location) there's a hose heading to his hot water tank for the boat (heat exchanger for Freshwater system for the boat) So he cant find the "petcocks" so to speak. is this one of those single point drain systems ?
He's has the boat professionally maintained for the past 3 years why it's sitting the way it is I have no clue....
Any help is appreciateD !
Joe

That heat sending unit is actually the knock sensor. Usually it;s installed on a Tee and the plug is mounted on the side of the tee. Be sure to hold the tee solid with a wrench when loosening the plug or you WILL break the threads off the tee where it goes into the block.

there's a hose heading to his hot water tank for the boat (heat exchanger for Freshwater system for the boat) So he cant find the "petcocks" so to speak.

There are no "petcocks" on these engines, only plugs.
You will have to disconnect the hose from that fitting to drain the block AND THE HWHeater.

You also need to remove the hoses from the raw water pump to drain them and the pump.

is this one of those single point drain systems ?

No, that single point drain system is Mercruiser, not Volvo

The plugs for the manifold are on the back ends of the manifolds between the manifold and the Y pipe. Not under the manifold like Merc.

IF your friend does have the OEM service manuals for the engine, look in the engine manual under the cooling section for draining instructions.

the plug is under the knock sensor, be probably cant see it. the knock sensor is mounted a bit higher on the block. the plug is just above the oil pan.

you say he has a heat exchanger? then i am assuming it is a closed cooling system. if it is, it already has antifreeze in it and he doesnt need to drain anything.

will need to drain the manifolds however. just make sure the antifreeze is in good condition, ie, less than 2 years old.

With a closed cooling system and a heat exchanger, only half of that system has antifreeze in it, the other half is raw water and MUST be drained or it will break the heat exchanger.

Wrong again.
The knock sensor and the plug are installed in that same 1/4" NPT hole in the block. It just has a tee in it. The side of the tee is the plug and the end of the tee is the knock sensor.
