I have a 5.7 ltre omc and it is leaking oil on the left side out of the flame arrestor down onto the top of the intake and it also has a steady flow of white smoke coming out of the valve cover hose at the flame arrestor the boat runs fine and the tempature is normal but does anyone know what would cause this and how to fix the problem is it possible there is a valve stuck, I just dont want to keep running it like this and make an even bigger problem later and the smoke sucks too

if it was the rings wouldnt the smoke be blueish in color,it just had the head gaskets redone last season and the smoke and oil is coming from the what I guess would be the pcv valve hose on top of the valve cover on the starboard side the port side is fine

Re: 5.7 litre smoking

A common problem with marine engines is the manifold and riser gaskets leaking and water getting into the cylinders when the engine is shut off. Then if the engine sits for a while, rust builds up and the engine won't turn over. Then people use penetrating oil and all kinds of things to finally get the engine freed up, when they do the rings run up and down that rusty cylinder until the rust is worn off the cylinder. The rings still may be stuck to the piston. Now I wonder why the rings would be bad on one side only ?????

No the compression test as in this service bulletin and see what you find.

Thank you for the information I'll go home today and do a compression check and start there,I have just one more question under the valve cover could it be a stuck valve or is there a valve that could be stuck open on that side and if so if i was to take off the valve cover what would i be looking for?

Nope,... It's just a crankcase vent, 'n nothin' more...
