Hi and welcome to iBoats,

Merc 5.7, is a GM 350. Long history and a superb engine. Merc Bravo III leg, bulletproof, good for about 600hp. Bit pricey on props and not a big range of them. As for the Bilgeliner, that's one you should get Bondo to comment on :D .

Chris..........

Mercruiser 5.7L EFI = GM 350ci 260HP electronic fuel injected motor.
Bilgeliner=Bayliner hope this helps.

Joan,

Hope you can forgive my humour(?). I don't get out alot.......

As Blk-n-Blu says... the Mercuiser 5.7 engine is based on the General Motors 350 cubic inch engine. Merc marinize it quite well with a different alternator, starter motor and their own ignition system. Don't know who supplies them the injection system or if it's their own. Have a vague memory of Motorola being involved somewhere.

The boat is one I see very few of in this part of the world. What I know is only what I have gleaned from places like this forum. It was poor form of me to have commented like that.

Hope I have cleared up the mess I created.

Chris.............

I would get a boat survey from a qualified mechanic.

Drive the boat.

Look at hundreds of others just like it on any of three web sites.

Get the NADA values (trailers are valued separately from the boat).

Get all maintenance records.

Get the manuals for the motor and drive.

Buy it and have fun!

Thanks everyone - Chris - that was pretty funny I get it now!! I think I'll let my husband check out the motor and I'll stick to the cabin features. We just started looking so wish us luck. Joan

Hi Joan,
As stated by achris,
The 5.7l Mercruiser, aka. Chevy Small Block 350cid, is the Most Used engine in All of Marinedom......
This motor has been around since 1955 in 1 form or another......
The Most Proven Engine Ever............
The Bravo Drive was introduced in the Very Late 80s... Also a Very Tough Drive........

As far as the Hull..........
I know there are Plenty of Bilgeliner Lovers out there, Some of whom will be Offended, But,

In My Honest Opinion , backed by over 20 years playing in, on,+ under the hatches of boats,
Bilgeliners are built of the Least amount of Inferior Materials Possible,
To create the Illusion of a Quality Boat................. ;)

Good Luck.......

Re: 5.7 Mercruiser Bravo III 260 HP

on the motor check. please hire a professional. dont do it yourself. this aint tire kicking and its very expensive to repair. trust me I repair them daily. its how I pay my tax's.
Hire a competent marine surveyor to inspect the hull and hyll systems then a competent marine tech to check the engine and drive systems. to mo low hours equals neglect. I see it all the time. cant be a water pump its only got 25 hours on it in ten years. what do ya mean its blown up it only got hot once.
so this purchase involves a lot up front but sometimes the outback cost leaves a bad taste in your mouth. bayliner has had quality control issues in the past. get a survey. I am merciless with customers that buy a rig without a survey:) :) .
good luck and keep posting

Re: 5.7 Mercruiser Bravo III 260 HP

Again, thank you - we bought our first boat this march it is a 2002 Glaston GS229 with a Volvo 5.0 GXI - I really love the boat but the cuddy doesn't have a stand up head & NOW I realize how important that is (for me at least) - so we are looking for something a little bigger that we can still trailer. I appreciate the input & advise about the surveyor. I didn't know you could do that. Joan
