I have a 97 Maxum 2300SC with a 5.7L Mercruiser and an Alpha One drive. After some fun experiences with bad gas, we rebuilt the carb. After getting everything reinstalled, setting idle, etc. etc., all seems to be in order except for the fact that we're getting some smoke at all RPM range (idle on up). It is not coming from the carb but rather up the two plastic hoses that attach to the PCV-like vents on the head covers near the oil fill points. These hoses are attached to a metal bracket that rests on top of the flame arrestor when everything is assembled.

It's a thin white smoke but there is a good amount of it. Any idea what this is, and how to rectify it?

It's called "blow by" Piston rings are on their way out. You can try to bandaid the problem with several products sold at your local autozone.
