I am helping my dad with his 06 Avalon with a 5.7 merc. It has a misfire that the mechanic cannot figure out and they are telling him that he needs a distributor. I am not able to go up and look at it myself. So I wanted some opinions. Here is the story. It developed a miss under load, so the cap, rotor, and plugs were replaced. Motor seemed better at first but developed the miss again under load. We were on vacation at the time and I noticed that the temp temp gauge wasn't moving much, barely off the stop. We also noticed that there was fuel in the oil. He took it back to the same marina. They replaced the thermostat and oil change. But the couldn't figure out why the fuel was in the oil. And the can't figure out why it is still missing. The believe that the distributor has play in it.

Could it be the distributor? It is extremely costly to replace for not being sure. Any thoughts?

It is EFI. I believe it was replaced at the beginning of the year, but I don't think that it was checked since the misfire.

The fuel filter was changed today and there is still the miss under load only. What else should be checked? Could it be the distributor that is causing the misfire?

Ayuh,... Thanks Good, but What was IN the filter that got thrown away,..??
It's Contents is a diagnostic tool,...

Yes, the ignition could be the issue,.....
Cap, rotor, wires, or plugs,...

Much deeper than that, ya almost gotta have a 'puter to scan it,...
