The ever continuing saga of my buddies 1997 Mariah with a 5.7L mercruiser and a bravo 3 outdrive.
He damaged the prop two weeks ago, thinks he hit a rock. We had issues with the old prop nuts so new nuts came in today, new set of props; put them on and torqued them (little to no play in the props once installed).
In March of this year his father in law (and actual boat owner) had work done including a new belt, new plugs and wires, new impeller, oil change and overall inspection. Mechanic said boat ran fine but did note the exhaust bellow needed to be replaced.
Boat ran for about 4 hours since then with no issues, until the rock hit.
After we installed the props tonight, boat was hard to start. Finally started and once put in gear it died. This went on for a while and I was finally able to get the boat to keep running while in drive and we idled around the dock. Temp, oil pressure and battery voltage were all normal. Pull the boat out of drive and it died. Finally decided to put it on the trailer. Will go to the shop tomorrow.
After we pulled it out I noticed a couple things - there was a rattle near the cavitation plate that sounded like a piece of metal. The exhaust bellow was fully torn in two in the middle. When we pulled the plug about a gallon of water came out of the boat.
Curious as to what the iboats experts think. Gut tells me its something with the carb. If he damaged the prop shaft (hence the metal rattle), would that affect the engine dying?
I'm interested to see how this plays out. Feel bad for my buddy though, but like I told him, this is just a part of dealing with a boat.
*******UPDATE*******
Turns out when the carb was rebuilt in March at a mechanic in Lake Havasu he didn't rebuilt it right. He used two wrong gaskets and one of the screws was all the way in. Mechanic in San Antonio re-rebuilt it and she runs perfect now.
