I have a Mercruiser 5.7 with a new Edelbrock 1409 Carb & a new Performer RPM intake. I'm connecting everything back up and before I go make a custom bracket for my throttle linkage, I'd like to see if anyone know of something I can use.

I believe there is a bracket (Edelbrock 8197) that you can buy that has an "arm" which will give you several points to mount and adjustment plate. The bracket I have actually fits under the carburetor, though. Here's a pic, you can kind of tell where everything mounts, even though my distributor is on the correct end of the block, unlike yours :) . I just cut a piece of angled-aluminum for the cable bracket, but I'm sure they make a pre-made bracket that will work, too.

Thanks haulnazz15

Good info, I didn't run into that bracket on my initial web search. That exact setup you have looks like it would work.

I also found this bracket: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/edl-8032
It'll bolt directly onto my Vortec intake. I would only use the piece that bolts down, the other part is for cars. I'll drill out a hole to bolt down the cable anchor.

This bracket is a little easier to install, and a little cheaper.

Ahh, very nice. I have the Edelbrock Performer intake manifold as well, so those brackets wouldn't work for me as they'd be too far towards the rear of the engine for the threaded brass barrel to reach. Looks like it'll work great for your SBC though, good find!

Re: 5.7 With Edelbrock 1409 Carb Throttle Linkage

Ok, I got everything installed, and the bracket fit nicely.

My next dilemma is that the throttle cables' stroke is too long for the throttle stroke on the Edelbrock 1409 carb. On the throttle cable, idle to WOT moves the cable about 3-1/8" and on the carb, the throttle lever has a 2-3/8" stroke.

I'm thinking that I just need a larger throttle lever on the carb, something that will add about 3/4" to the carbs stroke?

Any ideas?

FYI - This is a new engine, the previous engine was a 4.3 with a 2 barrel.

Why does it matter all that much how long the stroke is for the throttle cable? When you are at full throttle on the carb linkage, you aren't going to be able to give it any more throttle anyway.

Re: 5.7 With Edelbrock 1409 Carb Throttle Linkage

I followed the guidelines in the service manual, and connected the throttle cable to the carb while my boat was in Forward 100%. When I went to put my boat into Neutral (carb @ idle) the boat throttle arm got stuck about 3/4 of the way to Neutral. The linkage on the carb was all the way to idle, but the throttle cable wanted to push towards the bow about another 3/4".

Am I doing something wrong or do I need to contact Edelbrock to get an adapter for another 3/4" of throttle stroke?

If I connect the throttle cable while the boat is in Neutral (carb @ idle), when I push the boats throttle to forward it would only move about 3/4 of the way.

Would I be OK doing that? It would put stress on the throttle cable every time someone wanted full throttle.

You would think that it should be able to adjust out the slack with the brass barrel and any adjustment slots on the bracket you got. I know on my bracket pictured above, it has 3 sets of bolt holes to help adjust with the throttle cable throw.
