5.7GSi Shut Off while Cruising. Now no Electric

We were driving the boat to dinner last night. Cruising around 4000 RPM and engine shut down. Almost like the key was turned off. After that with exception of tilt/trim no electrical. Checked 50amp breaker, not tripped. Looked for loose wires and other obvious issues with no luck. Any suggestions as to where to look next would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Don't assume that just because the circuit breaker isn't popped out that it's good. Use a meter or test light to check both the in and out terminals to make sure they both have power. May also be a 20A fuse near the ignition switch.

Thanks for the tip. I will get on checking that after work tomorrow. Let you know how I make out.

Re: 5.7GSi Shut Off while Cruising. Now no Electric

To follow up:

Weather and work have delayed my getting to the boat but I did make it there today. Engine started up and ran fine at the dock, never did a thing from when we towed it in. Idled at the dock for 15 minutes still nothing. Next we decided to take a run around the bay, went ok for a mile or so at 1500 rpm. Went to go on plane and it shut down no electrical except trim pump again.

Towed it back again, letting it cool down to see if it will go again from cold. Seems the problem is heat/electrical related. No clue what that could mean.:blue:

Any ideas?

No electrical? Explain. Did all the instruments stop working? Engine won't turn over with the starter? Accessories stop working too. things like depth sounders, lights, etc.?

What's the full model number or serial number of your engine.

Re: 5.7GSi Shut Off while Cruising. Now no Electric

Only electrical item that works is tilt/trim, all other items are no go. I did not try to jump the starter directly as the boat will not run when no current is flowing. My boat is a 1998 Cobalt 252 with a Volvo Penta 5.7 GSi. Where on the engine would I find serial number/model number?

Almost like battery switch is off but there is power to tilt motor. I have checked the red breakers none are "tripped". My guess is that I will go back to boat later after it is cooled off completely and it will fire up. I'll see and report back.

Thank you

This should help with ID.

How to identify your engine or drive

98 might be close enough for this though, but you still need those numbers.

You should have 2 circuit breakers (both 50A) on the box on the front of the starboard exhaust elbow. One is for the trim/tilt motor, the other is for power to the helm.
Check them both with a meter, don't just assume the button not being popped isn't a problem.

MultiMeter should have the black test lead on a good clean ground, the red lead is used to check both terminals of both breakers.
