2001 VP 5.7 GXI-A won’t turn off with the key. Disconnect all wires at the key switch and still runs. Pull the emergency lanyard and still runs. Alternator is still charging.
I've read that the alternator can be back charging* the circuit. Some VP models have in-line diodes to prevent that, but the wire diagram for this engine doesn’t show any.
the alternator is a three wire hookup. Orange, purple and black.
Can anyone help me out?

Yes your ALT is back feeding the ignition

The GXI doesn't use diodes inline like the GL, but the A version like yours has a jumper wire on the ALT between the S (sense) and E (excite) connections. The later GXI models changed this connection.

Would post a pic of the wiring but not on the right computer currently

Ok, thanks. So that jumper prevents the back current?
That means I need a new alternator, is it a specific one one for that engine only? Stick with OEM?
thanks again!

VP used the mando ALT for the A and note the jumper. You would need to get yours rebuilt or replaced. Before doing either, do check how much the ALT is putting out when running, it should be close to 14.5V

Later models they changed the wiring so this won't happen.
