Was getting ready to put a new head gasket on a chevy 350 OMC circa 1983 and as I was cleaning the block side surface I noticed very minor pitting - not deep - extending about 3/8 of an inch around the two of the three top large water jackets.
I examined the old head gasket closely and was pretty certain the pitting was far away from the cylinder itself and appeared to seal well enough.
Under what situation would some minor pitting right around a water jacket on the block side stop the whole show? It's a true flat mating surface for my head but those tiny shallow little pits on a perfectly smooth surface make me want to pitch it out there to the true engine gurus.
