5.7L Alpha One Engine trim will lower, but no reaction when try to raise

Hello,<br />I have a 5.7L 235 HP Alpha 1 Mercruiser. All ready to get started this boating season and I ran into problem. The power trim is not functioning properly. When I push the down button on the power trim, the engine lowers fine as it should, however, when I push the up button there is no reaction whatsoever, no sound or anything. So basically it is currently stuck as low as it goes. Would someone have a clue as to what problem could be? Someone at marina I am keeping it at said it is probably a bad 'up' solenoid? Is this true? Please help! Also, if it is solenoid,which solenoid on iboats would replace it 'http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cgi?*******=857600398&**********=686800917&search_type=keyword&keywords=solenoid' ? Your trim senders could be adjusted wrong. they limit how far up and down your drive goes. Does it work when you put it in trailer mode?

Nope, when I push trailer mode no response either. Only have a response when I push down. When it gets all the way down it continues to make noise when button is pushed meaning down works 100%, pushing up does absolutely nothing (same for trailer button)

It could be several things. First I would check to see if there was power getting to the trim motor when you hit the up button. My switch in the handle went bad last year and I could only put the outdrive down. If your not getting power to the motor then work your way backwards through the system until you find what's causing the problem. It could just be some corroded connections.<br /><br />A repair manual with a wiring diagram would be helpful for you to understand and trace the system. <br /><br />Before you start replacing parts make sure of what the problem is.

Not sure what year Mercruiser you have, but here is a wiring diagram for a trim system, they are all "Kind of" the same.<br /><br />

I'd say, 90 percent that it's the up solenoid, it could be a wiring problem. Since the drive goes down, we know it's not the pump. Since neither the up switch or the trailer switch is working, we can eliminate the trim sender switch and the up switch. Easiest thing to do would be to put a test light or volt meter across the small connectors on the up relay(solenoid) while someone presses the switch. If you get voltage there....replace the relay.

thanks waterone1, that is very helpful. hopefully I have things fixed by next weekend. I may just go ahead and order solenoid today in presumption that that is the problem

it was the solenoid! i picked up the solenoid for about $20 today and swapped. Works great now, thanks! What a relief to avoid having a marina fix it and rape me with an enormous charge
