I plan to pull my 5.7l mercruiser Alpha one I/O in my 1999 Glastron GS-205. This is my first boat and my first baot engine removal. Main reason I am removing it is to replace the oil pan and freeze plugs and inspect the waterpassages as best I can. Boat was ran in salt water before I purchased. Also plan to repaint bilge area and clean and repaint motor.

Anyone have any recommendations on what I should do while I have motor out that a newgie might overlook?

Can I use a regular auto gasket for the oil pan? Motor is a one piece rear main seal as far as I know.

What is the best paint to use for the exhaust manifolds? I plan to use high heat auto style engine paint.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Definately use the newer one piece rubber oil pan gasket. Itis a vast improvement over the old three piece gasket. It is a lot easier to install correctly and less chance of leakage. There is no difference between automotive and marine. You can get the gasket at Auto Zone or any other parts store.

Get a Mercruiser Maintenance Manual, it will answer alot of your questions.

While you have access to the bottom end, why not check rod and main bearings and install a new oil pump. Never have a better chance to detect and correct a potential problem.

Hi heat paint is not necessary for the manifolds as they do not get too hot. Use a rust resistant paint instead. Inspect the timing cover for rusting and replace if necessary. If you feel energetic, you can remove a main and rod bearing and take it to the auto parts store to get a replacement. They will likely need to use the numbers on the bearings to get a match.
