I just bought a 1994 23 ft sundancer with a 5L mercruiser in it.The previous owner replaced the engine in spring 2003.Seems he did'nt winterize the boat, and the block cracked. He showed me the receipts for the work he had done, and the boat seems to run fine.My question is should I be worried about problems with the stern drive? The shop that did the engine relacement did not show a charge for inspecting the stern drive (alpha 1) The hour meter is only showing 230 hrs. I only paid 14000$ with the trailer so I won't spending a little for piece of mind.

Thanks
Jim

No - the drive wouldn't suffer anything from a not winterized/cracked engine.

The drive needs it's own maintenance of course, but it holds no water (when out of the water).

Do a service on it and you're OK!

Hey Charlie, yes I took it out for a test run in lake huron, everything seemed o.k.. I was worried that the engine may have puked a piece of the block out the water exhaust, is this posible? I only ran it for about 20 min at 28mph froze my but off so had to keep it short. water temp remained steady but a little low, probly because the water temp is 38 f. Should it cecked anyway?

any advice appreciated
jim

p.s. maybe I'm being alittle paranoid, but it seems the first thing a mechanic says to me" I've never seen that happen before"

Assuming the replacement engine was the same displacement/horsepower, you should be fine. Normal spring outdrive maintainance should be fine. If however he went from say a 4.3 to a 5.0, you may need a gearing change.
