I am working on a 98 force/mercury for a guy so I dont know the characteristics of this motor but I am having a hard time starting it. It likes to kick back on start up and also seems to have way too much compression, which Im sure it doesnt due to this motor hasnt ever been apart,it just sounds like it. I cant seem to get it to crank very fast often enough to fire it up. I tried it with the plug wires off to see if it was the ignition but it didnt change anything. I even pulled the plugs to see if it had enough power to turn it over and it cranked fast as I would expect it would. The starter seems to work ok.

Re: 50 force kickback at start

It could be the starter going south, or the battery. Try rope-starting to see if it starts better or faster.
watch out for 2cycle kickback tho!
Once you have it running, check the timing and timing advance linkage.
